Closed system vs. Open BIM

By working with open formats, any application of any developer can be easily integrated in the Open BIM flow, which allows for the use of an infinite number of specialist tools to develop the projects.

Enjoy the advantages of working with an open system.

Information consolidation

In the Open BIM flow, users work with specific and highly specialised applications to solve each aspect of the project in detail.

The relationship and interaction amongst all the applications is solved via the consolidation process. The consolidation of the information consists in including and integrating the BIM model composed of all the solutions adopted for each project area. Using open format interchange files, the applications are capable of reading all the information of the project (be it thermal loads, radiant floor circuits, lighting, etc.) and show it in an integrated way.

Furthermore, with the consolidation process, the whole project can be generated allowing users to detect any possible interferences between the adopted solutions.

All in the same direction

In usual two-way synchronisation processes, when the same data is found in different applications and can be modified in all of them, each tool works in a different direction to the rest, since it has to load all the data of the project, and data belonging to other analysis models can be modified.

Traditional BIM flow

This implies that there is not a clear hierarchy of the information, since the data is present and can be modified in all the tools at the same time.

Using Open BIM technology, and thanks to the updating process, each piece of data which is worked with is located only where it should be, in other words, the application that is destined to solve that part of the project. This way, the information only moves in a single direction, since each user develops his/her part of the work autonomously without having to continuously load all the project.

Open BIM flow

Flexibility and coordination

The current BIM work surroundings are based on the development of projects using a single large application, which prevents users from using specialised tools which they are used to working with and, additionally, conditions the rest of the members of the working group to use the same tool.

Furthermore, in these generic BIM applications, there is not a clear classification of the project information, since the values corresponding to an element are accessible to all users and can be modified by any of them. Therefore, it is impossible to know which user or data has greater hierarchy.

In the Open BIM flow, open formats are used at all times, which implies that any tool of any manufacturer can be part of the workflow in a simple way and, therefore, does not oblige users to have to modify their current working habits, since it is the different applications that are used in each discipline, which are in charge of unifying and integrating all the solutions proposed by the members of the team in the BIM model.
